Gloria Willett was not your typical activist. Instead of marching in the streets or holding rallies, she found her passion for activism in an unconventional place – the great outdoors. As a spine surgery patient herself, Gloria discovered the healing power of nature and used it to impact others undergoing similar struggles.
In 2010, Gloria underwent spine surgery to treat her chronic back pain caused by a herniated disc. The surgery was successful, but she struggled with physical limitations and emotional hurdles during her recovery process. After months of battling depression and frustration, she turned to outdoor activities as a way to regain control of her life.
Through hiking, camping, and other outdoor active spine surgeon activities, Gloria found solace in nature and slowly began healing both physically and mentally. She realized that spending time outdoors not only helped her cope with post-surgery challenges but also improved her overall well-being.
Inspired by her own experience, Gloria founded “Outdoor Activism”, a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting the healing benefits of outdoor activities for individuals struggling with medical conditions or disabilities. With a team of volunteers made up of doctors, therapists, psychologists, and experienced hikers, Outdoor Activism organizes events that introduce people dealing with health challenges to various forms of outdoor recreation such as hiking trails or kayaking trips.
One notable initiative by Outdoor Activism is their partnership with spine surgeons who sponsor patients struggling with post-surgery recovery to join their guided hikes. This program has proved successful in helping patients regain strength both physically and emotionally while connecting them with others facing similar challenges.
Gloria’s passion for outdoor activism has also extended beyond just patient support groups. She has been actively involved in lobbying for government policy changes that will make national parks more accessible for individuals with disabilities or limited mobility. Her efforts have resulted in several parks adding accessible trails and amenities that allow people from all walks of life to enjoy the beauty of nature.
Gloria’s impact is not limited to the realm of spine surgery – she has also been a strong advocate for mental health. She believes that spending time in nature can provide a sense of peace and calmness for individuals battling depression and anxiety.
Through her work with Outdoor Activism, Gloria has made a significant impact on the lives of many individuals struggling with health challenges. Her passion and dedication have helped create a community that supports each other through difficult times while promoting the healing power of nature. As she continues to push for change and spread awareness, Gloria’s legacy will continue to inspire others to find healing in the great outdoors.
